(Teen travelers) Tourism troubles and its effect to the environment of Antarctica

July 27th, 2010 admin Posted in travel No Comments »

By Kenneth Rockwell

The tough features of Antarctica, such as ice, snow, isolation, high winds and raging seas are still not enough for many tourists, especially the hardcore adventurers will be coming in aboard cruise liners this coming tourist season, except around 130 of these visitors. Such a total may only be 400 people more than the number of visitors last season, specifically from mid November through February, it was still able to jump 70 percent higher than the previous 6,585 seasons that Antarctica opened itself to tourists. Watchers of the White Continent have growing trepidation over the environmental state in Antarctica and also reveal that there can be a flood of annual visitors going by the thousands.

On average, an Antarctic cruise can go up to twenty thousand dollars for each individual, while the average 14-day cruise costs a heavy six to seven thousand dollars and this does not include round trip air fare to Ushuaia, Argentina, specifically in Tierra del Fuego which has become the most known common departing point, used 90 percent of the time. Despite the fact that Antarctica appears to be indestructible especially with the cost of venturing there as well as the impossible climate and geographic characteristics, the fact is that its ecosystem may soon begin to suffer greatly from the throng of travelers.

The project director spearheading the Antarctic Project believes that the beauty of Antarctica must be seen by many people but there is a growing need to cap tourists from flooding it every single year, along with prohibiting more sites to be explored. This Washington founded project works as the secretariat for over 200 environmental groups throughout forty different countries. While people promise to protect Antarctica’s conservation efforts after seeing this wondrous place, there is still danger in so many people loving it too much as it is a very fragile destination.

A major concern of this director, who favors a limit of 6,000 visitors a year, is that most tourists visit the same few places on the 800 mile long Antarctic Peninsula, which has the continent’s biggest concentration of penguins, seals and birds. But it is extremely rare that tourists groups setting foot on land exceed a hundred members. It is so bad that animals get disrupted when there are visitors for they cannot get food for themselves or for their young and they are also not able to rest.

Science is unable to see yet if this will have a long term impact, she further reveals. Tourists touching the plants and not abiding by garbage disposal laws are two of Antarctica’s environmental quandaries. By reinforcing the Antarctic Treaty, we understand why when travelers go ashore, large and experienced staffs make sure they have very little impact if none at all, and this also sheds light as to why most tour operators abide by such environmental guidelines. That series of agreements includes the 1959 Antarctic Treaty, since signed by 43 nations, plus environmental protocol that since Jan 14, 1998, has banned mining and oil drilling and provided other environmental safeguards, including fishing limits and occasional Antarctic cruises.

Zodiacs are now being used by the tour association, based in New York that voluntarily adopted the 100 person limit for shore visits, for these motorized rubber boats are more convenient. Of the 15 vessels in Antarctica this season, nine fly Russian flags. With the Soviet Union’s break up, an opportunity for tour operators came as several small ships have been made available. Those ships, including an icebreaker and several other vessels whose hulls were hardened against ice, carry from 40 to 80 passengers. Now, we see how obvious the problems of Antarctica keeps concerning more and more parties. We can only wait for the day in the future when, looking back, we would be so relieved that our worries were in vain. But as we wait for science to bring forth the answer, it is best to take it upon ourselves and restrain our trips to the Frozen Continent.

Long term effects of tourism in Antarctica

By Kenneth Rockwell

Amidst the harsh conditions in Antarctica such as high winds, isolation, ice, rough seas and cold snow, both hardy and soft types will, precisely for such reasons, venture into this continent this tourist season, and all eleven thousand two hundred of them coming in from cruise liners, except for a few, around 130, who will opt for alternative transportation measures. Even as the total is around 400 more than last year’s flow of tourists, specifically from mid November to February, it is 70 percent higher than 6,585 seasons before it. Antarctica’s many watchers are growing worried towards its environment and warned that Antarctic visitors could grow by the thousands annually.

Cruising to Antarctica entails twenty thousand dollars per person, plus a 14 day cruise that costs a hefty six to seven thousand dollars as sum but the passenger still needs to depart from Tierra del Fuego located in Ushuaia, Argentina, which is the origination point 90 percent of the travels to this continent so it can get really costly. Many environmental experts state that Antarctica is not invincible even with its tough climate and geography as well as the price of getting there as the tourists keep growing each year and this truly affects the land’s ecosystem.

The director of the Antarctic Project said that people should have an opportunity to see Antarctica’s beauty, but there should be a cap on the number of visitors and a ban on any new sites. This secretariat for more than two hundred environmental organizations spanning over 40 nations is based in Washington. While people, after visiting Antarctica become committed to protecting its environment, the truth is that there are just too many of these travelers and there’s a risk that they are falling for this fragile place too much.

A fair limit of only 6,000 guests annually is being proposed by this director as he is very much concerned about the damage caused by the thousands of travelers heading to the usual places which is home to the most species of birds, penguins and seals in the 800 mile Antarctic Peninsula. However, tourists groups setting foot on the ground does not often exceed 100 visitors at a certain occasion. Animals get disrupted and so they are unable to rest between visits and don’t have, much time to hunt for food for themselves along with their little ones.

But when it comes to a long term effect, not even science can answer that, she notes. Growing fears thrive in the probability that garbage will be left behind by tourists and that they will touch the plants. This is the reason why visitors going ashore are guarded by experienced staffs to make sure these do not create minimal impact and further thanks to the Antarctic System, most of today’s tour operators adhere to such promulgations. The 1959 Antarctic Treaty supported by 43 different nations, along with the environmental protocol signed last January 14, 1998 pushed for the end of mining and oil drilling, and also implemented safety measures such as limiting fishing trips and cruises throughout White Continent to protect the environment.

The association of tour members, which is based in New York, saw to it that they all adopted the 100 person limit for shore visits, also employing zodiacs, which are motorized rubber boats for good reasons. Nine Russian flags are flown by the vessels out of 15 of them this season. Small ships were made available for tour operators as soon as the break up of the Soviet Union transpired. Those ships, including an icebreaker and several other vessels whose hulls were hardened against ice, carry from 40 to 80 passengers. Meanwhile, though, concern about Antarctica’s environment persists. We can only hope that one day in the future, we can look back and laughed at how we worried when there was not a problem at all. But as we wait for science to bring forth the answer, it is best to take it upon ourselves and restrain our trips to the Frozen Continent.

Tour groups working against environmental conservation in Antarctica

By Kenneth Rockwell

This tourist season in Antarctica, hardy types will still venture to this frozen land even with its unfriendly snow, ice, isolation, high winds and raging seas, and about the 11,200 tourists gearing for the trip shall arrive from cruise ship travel while only 130 of them will come from other transportation. Such a total may only be 400 people more than the number of visitors last season, specifically from mid November through February, it was still able to jump 70 percent higher than the previous 6,585 seasons that Antarctica opened itself to tourists. Watchers of Antarctica are getting worried toward the environment of Antarctica and also forecast an annual flood of visitors rising up to the thousands.

Despite Antarctica appearing to be insulated from the effects caused by the influx of tourists due to the high price of going there along with the hard-to-contend-with climate and geography, most of today’s environmental experts see this to cause lasting ecological disaster.

The project director spearheading the Antarctic Project believes that the beauty of Antarctica must be seen by many people but there is a growing need to cap tourists from flooding it every single year, along with prohibiting more sites to be explored. This secretariat for more than two hundred environmental organizations spanning over 40 nations is based in Washington. There is still harm in the fact that people heading to Antarctica come back committed to its conservation as this is a very fragile land and there can sometimes be too many visitors flooding in most of who are getting to love it too much.

This director is largely concerned about the many tourists venturing to the same places on Antarctic Peninsula which is 800 miles long and has the largest concentration of penguins, seals and birds so he is pushing for a 6,000 limit of visitors per year. But it is not usual for the tourist groups reaching the land at a time exceeding one hundred individuals. It is sad that animals are bothered as they rest, and neither can they get some food for their babies or for their own selves so this is very harmful.

Science is unable to see yet if this will have a long term impact, she further reveals. Among the concerns are that tourists will touch plants and leave garbage behind. With the proper reinforcement of the Treaty of Antarctica, we know understand the reason why many experienced staff see to it that travelers going ashore do not make much or any impact, and also this sheds light as to why most tour operators strictly operate with these guidelines and rules. To protect the environment, the series of efforts such as the Antarctic Treaty of 1959, ratified by 43 different countries, along with the environmental protocol signed last January 14, 1998 put an end to the various oil explorations and mining operations and even went into promoting environmental safeguards like limiting the fishing sprees along with lessening cruises around the Antarctic.

Members of the tour association, which is based in New York voluntarily adopted the 100 person limit for shore visits, for which they use motorized rubber boats called zodiacs. Air craft with the flag of Russia would be flying, 9 out of the 15 this season. With the Soviet Union’s break up, an opportunity for tour operators came as several small ships have been made available. As for the passengers, about 40 to 80 are welcome in these vessels, including an icebreaker and several others with hardened hulls that can resist strong ice. It is very apparent though that there is growing concern on the environmental frontier of the White Continent. It’s possible that in the future, we’ll look back and say, no problem, we worried about it needlessly. For the sake of this continent, we should limit our travels there until the time that science presents the solutions.

Antarctica Has Astonishing Natural Resources

By Israel Torres

Cordoned off as a realm only for international scientific endeavors, Antarctica offers countless opportunities for research that can not be obtained anywhere else on the globe. The great ice sheet of Antarctica is amazing because it covers most of the land and also provides hundreds of miles of permanent ice shelves over the ocean. Crossing the Ross Shelf Ice would take some time, as it is as big as the State of Texas. Moving northbound at 1800 feet per year, scientists are tracking the edge of ice sheet.

With almost two percent of all the water on planet earth, the continent holds about 90 percent of all the ice on earth. The most critical facet of maintaining ocean levels revolves around the great inland ice shelf’s stability. If it continues to melt, sea levels would rise visibly, and destroy seaports and alter coastlines.

If all this ice melted at once, then the sea levels would go up by more than 250 feet. That’s why it is so important for us to find out exactly what is going on with the Antarctic icecap’s health. The backward or forward movement of the ice doesn’t really matter to most. In theory, this enormous sheet of ice contains a complete record of all geophysical events from today all the way back to potentially a million years.

History’s actions, like smelting lead and the use of leaded gasoline, show in the ice. Measurements have been taken regarding the concentration of typical lead which precipitated over the surface of the ice during the prior 60 years. Because we have burned leaded gasoline, the decomposed lead alkyls have created an increase in the lead concentration on the surface of the ice, and these levels have been increasing steadily over the last ten years. A quick look at the serious nature of pollution can be seen with this issue.

DDT didn’t show up in the ice and snow on Antarctica, but penquins, seals and some fish did show traces of this pollutant. Space particles have always been entering earth’s atmosphere. These can be examined in the ice sheet and even dated according to their depth. Assuming that additional research uncovers that these particles contain a revolving pattern, then predictions concerning the amount and type of space particles that vehicles will run into can be determined.

Lichens make up a majority of Antarctic vegetation. Mites and springtails are the common animal life forms on the land itself. A wingless fly is the biggest land animal there. Remarkably, none of the insects on Antarctica can’t fly. The Weddell Seal and flightless penguin are mammals that live the farthest south; they live in the waters around Antarctica. To find food, the Weddell seal has been known to submerge itself for as long as 30 minutes and to depths of approximately 1,500 feet, which surprised researchers studying the creatures.

Adelie penguins make their nests on ice-free spots on the coast of Antarctica and then head northward during the frigid winters. No compass could compare with their ability to maintain a straight path. The use the sun, and their incredible biological abilities to do so. As a study, six of the Adelie penguins were released over 2,400 miles from their natural habitat and three of them found their way back within ten months. There are more that were let go near the South Pole. After they emerged, they studied their new environment, focused on the sun a bit, and then headed exactly in the right direction for their home nests.

The biggest creature ever to live contributes to this region’s productivity by its mere presence. Eating nearly one ton of shrimp daily, and weighing in at five times any past dinosaur, the great blue whale is nearing extinction. Antarctic waters house lots more species of fish than the Arctic does. With 90 percent of bottom living Antarctic fish only found in the Antarctica region, this proves to be an astonishing example of the capability of the Antarctic Convergence.
