Engineers of the dam, located in Yichang City, central Hubei Province, said the water level of the Three Gorges reservoir, which dropped a few centimeters over the weekend, might now rise to break its record high of the year - 158.86 meters, or 13.86 meters above the warning line.

Authorities said a new round of flood waters would gush into the Three Gorges reservoir on Monday after days of rainstorms swelled branches of the Yangtze on the upper reaches.

On last Tuesday, the flow on the river’s upper reaches topped 70,000 cubic meters a second when it reached the Three Gorges reservoir, about 20,000 cubic meters more than the flow during the 1998 floods that killed 4,150 people and the highest level since the dam was completed last year.

Engineers said Monday’s flood flow is not likely to exceed last Tuesday’s peak.

Floods in China this year had left 742 people dead and 367 missing as of last Friday. Premier Wen Jiabo has told local authorities to be fully aware of the “grave flood-control situation” and to prepare for more serious flooding.

(The above text from China Daily)

Eight magnitude earthquake in Chile, Iceland volcanic eruption, Eight magnitude earthquake in China, 7.6 magnitude earthquake in Indonesia. Many disasters happened in recent years, many people are died in earthquake, lose their lives, their fanily, their house, their property, their friends why it happened so frequently? When people lose their happiness, but the disasters happened and rob their lives.

In the old time, people live in primitive environment, although they dont have beautiful house, and lucury life, but they live a in the world, which is filled with peace. In the modern time, peoples life style are give out s much carbon dioxide so that the temperature is getting higher and higher, the air-conditioner is everywhere, thus entered a vicious cycle. So we heard some places are happened what what what, the figure of death people is higher and higher day by day. What can we do for our environment? Here are some suggestions for you,I am sure you will do kind of our earth where we live.

1.when the air-conditioner is working, please turn on to 26℃. It not only do good to our body, save your money, protect you from getting a bad cold, but also do a big help to atmosphere. For example one air-conditioner reduce emissions of carbon dioxide 1ton in a year if turn one higher degree, so how about 100 million air-conditioners?

2.Low carbon travel. You can take a bus or ride a bike instead of driving a car.

3.Use e-mail instead of priting. And dont buy anything that you do not needed, such as cloth,make-up products and so on.

4.Dont use disposable wooden chopsticks and when you go shopping, please remember to bring a environmental protection bags

It stills many ways to protect our environment, I just list some ways that most related our life. You can persuade your friends, your family to join in this group. Protect our environment need to everybody togethers work hard, and its a long jounery,we cannot stop in midway, we should keep working harder and harder.

Come on, my friends! Do it together, please!

Eighteen days had passed in the icy land of Antarctica, arriving at the airport according to the schedule have seemed to be the finest warm homecoming. After nearly three weeks staying at the bottom of the world, four members of the Antarctica expedition had returned home to a hero’s reception. For this reason, it was an extraordinary event and emotional and worthy record of history.

An awful weather condition retained the Antarctica’s scientific expedition for about 10 more days than anticipated, hence, as the arrival day finally came, the homecoming party was arranged. An hour before the plane was due, close relatives and friends sat in black plastic airport chairs peep in at the large windows on the landing field and glancing at their watches. Down the hall, 25 students gathered with teachers and parents, nibbling turkey sandwiches and preparing to pamper their teacher with hugs.

There were gifts such as heart shaped balloons, a dozen of roses and a welcome banner with images of penguins on it provided by the welcome troops. Four members of the team brought along two handbags of meteorites which will later be taken photographs, cut open and experimented and tales of a mission accomplished. The quest also included two expert astronauts who worked at NASA before, a NASA scientist and a resident of Chicago who contributed notably in funding part of the expedition. The trip leads the group to the Patriot Hills of Antarctica, South Pole and Thiel Mountains though it is not high as the Rockies, yet just as beautiful.

Back in the States, there was a team member who complained about the technology they had along the way. They had satellite phones that were no good. Providing them of memories of what they let behind were these. In no time he will be able to return to being a professor of astronomy and geology in a populated continent.

These people have been in similar escapades in unfamiliar territories like this one. Last summer was when two of them went to Turkey with a scientific team for the solar eclipse seen from the coast of the Black Sea. Over there they actually found themselves in a similar situation as that of their unanticipated stay in the Antarctic. At the time there was an intense earthquake and so they stayed long after the solar eclipse was over. The earthquake struck when the two were 200 miles away from its epicenter and so the magnitude they felt was only 5.5.

Camaraderie on the trip was what he considered to be the best part of the trip and he also said that there was less stress with images of blue fields and snow covered scenery. This team with a retired NASA scientist was seen to be an exclusive club. But they’re down to earth people no pun intended, very easy to talk to, very easy to be with. They favored fun over egos. Their days in Antarctica, even the unanticipated ones, were filled with reading, talking, cross country skiing, and snowmobiling.

It was about a month ago when a the 24 year old team member shared with reporters and staff members her outfit for the trip and it includes boots, goggles, heavy gloves, and an energetic smile. She wore a cheerful smile upon returning with some sneakers, jeans, and a sweatshirt. A trip to the Mars like continent became a possibility for she incorporated space science in her classes. It also gave students a once in lifetime learning experience. It is possible to learn as things are tied in. Much exposure for kids to science and history is possible with an explorer for a teacher.

For her experiments during the trip, they were about temperature, rocks, and gravity, much like what students back home are doing. Data were transmitted to students from 11 classrooms via satellite phone and email. For the questions as well as the answers, they were all pretty funny. To blame for the comedy were the differences among answers. Her experience taught the students that data can be a little different when performed in a snowy desert with temperatures plunging to well below zero.

While it’s tempting to want to bring your pet with you, some animals aren’t suited to travel. So before you bring your ‘best friend’ with you, go through the following checklist first:

Is it safe if I bring my pet with me?

Honestly evaluate your animal’s health and his ability to travel.

Does my pet like to travel?

If your pet just runs away when you open that car door, it might be best to just have him stay with a pet sitter instead of bringing him with you.

Will this trip be appropriate for my pet

Some destinations just are not pet-friendly.

After going through the questions, and you feel the trip will be good for your pet, or if the trip is a must because you are relocating, it’s important to plan and minimize the risk to your ‘best friend’.

Preparation

If your pet’s only experience in a car has been a trip to the vet, you will want to acclimate him to riding in the car a few weeks before your trip. Start with short trips, such as 5 or 10 minute drives. And always remember to end the trip with a positive reward, such as a special treat or fun activity. Slowly lengthen the trips to 30 minutes or one hour.

Safety on the Road

If you travel with your kids, you always fasten their seatbelts. Do the same for your pets. It’s a must for you to restrain your pet as you travel. A variety of restraints are available that offer added mobility and provide an option to the traditional metal travel crate. Think safety harnesses that can attach to any seatbelt, or even safety gates that will allow your pet some mobility in their own space, as you travel. Sturdy, well ventilated crates are a must for smaller animals, such as cats, that normally don’t travel as much as dogs.

If you roll using one of those big RV’s, you do have more freedom and flexibility, but you still need to be aware of the basics. Make sure all items, such as food or medicine, are properly stowed and secured inside your RV. To avoid injury to loose animals during sudden stops and turns, block off small areas with baby gates. No matter what type of vehicle you drive, you will need to stop every few hours for a pet pit stop. And always remember to put the leash on your pet before you open the vehicle’s doors.

Bring a Pet Travel Kit

Don’t forget to pack a separate bag for your animal. To avoid an upset stomach, take some of his favorite food, as well as a gallon of water because water characteristics change regionally. Cats can generally travel up to 10 hours without having to use a litterbox, but it never hurts to bring along a disposable litterbox for emergencies or overnight stops. A pet first-aid kit is a must, in case of accidents. And a favorite toy or pillow will give your animal a sense of familiarity. Keep a current health certificate for your pet handy during interstate travel, because many states require one.

The tough features of Antarctica, such as ice, snow, isolation, high winds and raging seas are still not enough for many tourists, especially the hardcore adventurers will be coming in aboard cruise liners this coming tourist season, except around 130 of these visitors. Such a total may only be 400 people more than the number of visitors last season, specifically from mid November through February, it was still able to jump 70 percent higher than the previous 6,585 seasons that Antarctica opened itself to tourists. Watchers of the White Continent have growing trepidation over the environmental state in Antarctica and also reveal that there can be a flood of annual visitors going by the thousands.

On average, an Antarctic cruise can go up to twenty thousand dollars for each individual, while the average 14-day cruise costs a heavy six to seven thousand dollars and this does not include round trip air fare to Ushuaia, Argentina, specifically in Tierra del Fuego which has become the most known common departing point, used 90 percent of the time. Despite the fact that Antarctica appears to be indestructible especially with the cost of venturing there as well as the impossible climate and geographic characteristics, the fact is that its ecosystem may soon begin to suffer greatly from the throng of travelers.

The project director spearheading the Antarctic Project believes that the beauty of Antarctica must be seen by many people but there is a growing need to cap tourists from flooding it every single year, along with prohibiting more sites to be explored. This Washington founded project works as the secretariat for over 200 environmental groups throughout forty different countries. While people promise to protect Antarctica’s conservation efforts after seeing this wondrous place, there is still danger in so many people loving it too much as it is a very fragile destination.

A major concern of this director, who favors a limit of 6,000 visitors a year, is that most tourists visit the same few places on the 800 mile long Antarctic Peninsula, which has the continent’s biggest concentration of penguins, seals and birds. But it is extremely rare that tourists groups setting foot on land exceed a hundred members. It is so bad that animals get disrupted when there are visitors for they cannot get food for themselves or for their young and they are also not able to rest.

Science is unable to see yet if this will have a long term impact, she further reveals. Tourists touching the plants and not abiding by garbage disposal laws are two of Antarctica’s environmental quandaries. By reinforcing the Antarctic Treaty, we understand why when travelers go ashore, large and experienced staffs make sure they have very little impact if none at all, and this also sheds light as to why most tour operators abide by such environmental guidelines. That series of agreements includes the 1959 Antarctic Treaty, since signed by 43 nations, plus environmental protocol that since Jan 14, 1998, has banned mining and oil drilling and provided other environmental safeguards, including fishing limits and occasional Antarctic cruises.

Zodiacs are now being used by the tour association, based in New York that voluntarily adopted the 100 person limit for shore visits, for these motorized rubber boats are more convenient. Of the 15 vessels in Antarctica this season, nine fly Russian flags. With the Soviet Union’s break up, an opportunity for tour operators came as several small ships have been made available. Those ships, including an icebreaker and several other vessels whose hulls were hardened against ice, carry from 40 to 80 passengers. Now, we see how obvious the problems of Antarctica keeps concerning more and more parties. We can only wait for the day in the future when, looking back, we would be so relieved that our worries were in vain. But as we wait for science to bring forth the answer, it is best to take it upon ourselves and restrain our trips to the Frozen Continent.

Long term effects of tourism in Antarctica

By Kenneth Rockwell

Amidst the harsh conditions in Antarctica such as high winds, isolation, ice, rough seas and cold snow, both hardy and soft types will, precisely for such reasons, venture into this continent this tourist season, and all eleven thousand two hundred of them coming in from cruise liners, except for a few, around 130, who will opt for alternative transportation measures. Even as the total is around 400 more than last year’s flow of tourists, specifically from mid November to February, it is 70 percent higher than 6,585 seasons before it. Antarctica’s many watchers are growing worried towards its environment and warned that Antarctic visitors could grow by the thousands annually.

Cruising to Antarctica entails twenty thousand dollars per person, plus a 14 day cruise that costs a hefty six to seven thousand dollars as sum but the passenger still needs to depart from Tierra del Fuego located in Ushuaia, Argentina, which is the origination point 90 percent of the travels to this continent so it can get really costly. Many environmental experts state that Antarctica is not invincible even with its tough climate and geography as well as the price of getting there as the tourists keep growing each year and this truly affects the land’s ecosystem.

The director of the Antarctic Project said that people should have an opportunity to see Antarctica’s beauty, but there should be a cap on the number of visitors and a ban on any new sites. This secretariat for more than two hundred environmental organizations spanning over 40 nations is based in Washington. While people, after visiting Antarctica become committed to protecting its environment, the truth is that there are just too many of these travelers and there’s a risk that they are falling for this fragile place too much.

A fair limit of only 6,000 guests annually is being proposed by this director as he is very much concerned about the damage caused by the thousands of travelers heading to the usual places which is home to the most species of birds, penguins and seals in the 800 mile Antarctic Peninsula. However, tourists groups setting foot on the ground does not often exceed 100 visitors at a certain occasion. Animals get disrupted and so they are unable to rest between visits and don’t have, much time to hunt for food for themselves along with their little ones.

But when it comes to a long term effect, not even science can answer that, she notes. Growing fears thrive in the probability that garbage will be left behind by tourists and that they will touch the plants. This is the reason why visitors going ashore are guarded by experienced staffs to make sure these do not create minimal impact and further thanks to the Antarctic System, most of today’s tour operators adhere to such promulgations. The 1959 Antarctic Treaty supported by 43 different nations, along with the environmental protocol signed last January 14, 1998 pushed for the end of mining and oil drilling, and also implemented safety measures such as limiting fishing trips and cruises throughout White Continent to protect the environment.

The association of tour members, which is based in New York, saw to it that they all adopted the 100 person limit for shore visits, also employing zodiacs, which are motorized rubber boats for good reasons. Nine Russian flags are flown by the vessels out of 15 of them this season. Small ships were made available for tour operators as soon as the break up of the Soviet Union transpired. Those ships, including an icebreaker and several other vessels whose hulls were hardened against ice, carry from 40 to 80 passengers. Meanwhile, though, concern about Antarctica’s environment persists. We can only hope that one day in the future, we can look back and laughed at how we worried when there was not a problem at all. But as we wait for science to bring forth the answer, it is best to take it upon ourselves and restrain our trips to the Frozen Continent.

Such a total may only be 400 people more than the number of visitors last season, specifically from mid November through February, it was still able to jump 70 percent higher than the previous 6,585 seasons that Antarctica opened itself to tourists. Watchers of Antarctica are getting worried toward the environment of Antarctica and also forecast an annual flood of visitors rising up to the thousands.

Despite Antarctica appearing to be insulated from the effects caused by the influx of tourists due to the high price of going there along with the hard-to-contend-with climate and geography, most of today’s environmental experts see this to cause lasting ecological disaster.

The project director spearheading the Antarctic Project believes that the beauty of Antarctica must be seen by many people but there is a growing need to cap tourists from flooding it every single year, along with prohibiting more sites to be explored. This secretariat for more than two hundred environmental organizations spanning over 40 nations is based in Washington. There is still harm in the fact that people heading to Antarctica come back committed to its conservation as this is a very fragile land and there can sometimes be too many visitors flooding in most of who are getting to love it too much.

This director is largely concerned about the many tourists venturing to the same places on Antarctic Peninsula which is 800 miles long and has the largest concentration of penguins, seals and birds so he is pushing for a 6,000 limit of visitors per year. But it is not usual for the tourist groups reaching the land at a time exceeding one hundred individuals. It is sad that animals are bothered as they rest, and neither can they get some food for their babies or for their own selves so this is very harmful.

Science is unable to see yet if this will have a long term impact, she further reveals. Among the concerns are that tourists will touch plants and leave garbage behind. With the proper reinforcement of the Treaty of Antarctica, we know understand the reason why many experienced staff see to it that travelers going ashore do not make much or any impact, and also this sheds light as to why most tour operators strictly operate with these guidelines and rules. To protect the environment, the series of efforts such as the Antarctic Treaty of 1959, ratified by 43 different countries, along with the environmental protocol signed last January 14, 1998 put an end to the various oil explorations and mining operations and even went into promoting environmental safeguards like limiting the fishing sprees along with lessening cruises around the Antarctic.

Members of the tour association, which is based in New York voluntarily adopted the 100 person limit for shore visits, for which they use motorized rubber boats called zodiacs. Air craft with the flag of Russia would be flying, 9 out of the 15 this season. With the Soviet Union’s break up, an opportunity for tour operators came as several small ships have been made available. As for the passengers, about 40 to 80 are welcome in these vessels, including an icebreaker and several others with hardened hulls that can resist strong ice. It is very apparent though that there is growing concern on the environmental frontier of the White Continent. It’s possible that in the future, we’ll look back and say, no problem, we worried about it needlessly. For the sake of this continent, we should limit our travels there until the time that science presents the solutions.

There are a few guided tours of Europe more emotional than a tour of the main sites of the Holocaust - the extermination of huge number of people in the 1930s and 1940s. Travels such as this is really exist for the traveler who wants to see a side of European modern history which is not often available to the regular traveler.

Guided tours relating Holocaust sites commonly begin in Amsterdam since many cruises as many flights from the US end up there firstly. In Amsterdam, you can go the historic Anne Frank home which has been became into a museum of linked artifacts. You can also trip the Corrie Ten Boom House, wherever a Dutch family hid many refugees from German rule.

Corrie Ten Boom was promoted in the book she wrote, The Hiding Place, which was eventually passed into a movie.

The next logical place on your journey is the Westerbork Transit Camp and later on, the Bergen-Belsen Concentration camp. Anne Frank died of typhus there and over 50,000 others died there also. Guided tours of these region will disply you what this people gone and also will provide you with a complete facts around the places history.

A lot of tours of Holocaust areas will demonstrate you the Wannsee Villa wherever the decision to exterminate the Jews was made. The villa is located in Berlin, that is similarly the site of the Jewish Museum in Berlin. Your journey lead will likely take you to both places in Berlin.

When in Germany, youll notice the Buchenwald camp in Weimar. Besides Jewish prisoners, many political prisoners, Communists and those occupied in medicine and also the arts were interned there and used for slave labor. Buchenwald was one of the few concentration camps that existed on German soil. Its a poignant visit however one value seeing.

Second, a lot of advise tours will take you to Krakow, Poland. Youll trip the Treblinka train station, one of the few remnants gone of the fatality camp. Treblinka was one of three death camps in that nobody certainly lived there and also entirely prisoners sent to the camp were killed. On a lighter note, you can see the original Shindlers Factory wherever several laborers were treated considerably better than their counterparts.

Not a unique one of the guided tours devoted to the Holocaust would miss a visit to the infamous Auschwitz plus Birkenau concentration camps. Many areas of this camps contain been ruined as they were a poor reminder of the awful things whichoccurred there however there are several places left to see and to think upon.

Today many tourists advised on the tours of the Holocaust run the risk of being stressed out by what theyve witnessed. For this cause, since the travel winds southward again, a stop in Prague, in the Czech Republic, might be a good idea.

Its a beautiful city with a lot of castles and also lovely architecture to notice and explore.

While in the Czech Republic, a lot of advise tours connected to the Holocaust will take you to the site of the village of Lidice plus the memorial there. It was the site wherever, in 1942, every male residents of the village were massacred plus the remaining villagers were deported before the village was destroyed in its entirety.

Camp Mauthausen in Austria and also Dachau in Germany will round out most advise travels concerning the Holocaust.

Snow and the cold is something this gentleman likes after working for the Atigun Pass, high above the Trans Alaska Pipeline. Hence, once this retired civil engineering expert heard more about the local university’s alumni association’s plans to travel to the white kingdom, Antarctica, he began to be all excited. This made me think of it as a marvelous idea. Antarctica has been mesmerizing real explorers even armchair ones in spite of its reputation of being the coldest and least hospitable place on Earth.

But the White Continent is not an easy or cheap place to get to so each year, lesser travelers come and see it. Challenging indeed for before one can reach the Antarctic Peninsula, he has to start from Argentina’s southernmost city known as Ushuaia, travel a thousand kilometers for a couple of days through the Drake Passage, grim with the world’s roughest sea weather.

Such experiences are not only profound, but are also life changing. Men traverse this land since the late 1800s after it has been discovered in 1820. But there were no commercial voyages to the region until after a few years after that the Antarctic Treaty was ratified, specifically in the year 1959, after this land was established as a natural reserve, a place for peace and science to thrive.

Yet while the travel industry evolved, it didn’t really take off until the collapse of the Iron Curtain early 1990s. But many tour operators seized ice rated expedition vessels from Russia and turned these into vessels for commercial travel, sensing the opportunity as there came no money to fund any scientific developments. Seasoned world explorers come in to visit, looking for something new and exciting. But some of the travelers, on the other hand, aspire to be like Sir Ernest Shackleton, whose legendary endurance expedition back in 1914 got written in history as the most spectacular tale of expedition survival.

This spectacular land will enable you to cruise among gigantic glaciers and icebergs and fill the landscape, promising enjoyment especially among artists, photographers and nature lovers. Here is where you shall see everything from seals and penguins not to forget whale varieties from killer, humpback and minke. Just don’t look for polar bears, which live in the circumpolar north.

Without the existence of developed ports and harbors, tourists had no choice but to hop on board zodiacs, which are small rubberized boats that are inflated. Get your camera ready as you may now kayak against icebergs, stand with penguins and even hike with them. You can expect the naturalist standing right there, ready to answer any questions you might ask, from the region’s history, wildlife, marine animals and even glaciology.

His travel was spent aboard a 5 star cruise liner for eight days while he was in Buenos Aires for three whole days and both featured lectures about landscapes and local fauna. He was so thrilled with the unforgettable penguin rookery trips he took along with naturalist tour guides. After these short legged birds curiously drew near him, they bravely put on an unforgettable show.

But not all people get to enjoy Antarctic travel as much as the other people. Some environmentalists look down on the growing number of tourists, as these might affect the delicate ecosystem of Antarctica, posing threats to wildlife breeding and reducing populations especially of the rarest of species. It is good to know that the international alliance of Antarctic tour operators have volunteered to adopt the standards to minimize the ill effects of tourism to the White Continent’s environment. If all tourists, companies and natural programs would comply with the good operational and conservation practices, the region would remain unblemished.

He adds that television shows further compound the problem as these make us think that animals including the thousands of penguins that finds home only in Antarctica as just forms of entertainment. Animals begin to ease out if they are used to the human presence. But this long term disassociation from the real world has become a huge quandary. Conservationists do not readily agree. But as people come into Antarctica, he argues, the more tourists will feel for this continent.

Anyone who has travelled internationally over recent years knows that the amount of information one has to navigate through can sometimes be quite stressful, pain staking and time consuming. Not only do you have to worry about airline strikes and holiday providers going bust, you have to think about flights, accommodation and car hire. All of which leaves very little time to worry about any visa requirements. It’s not such an ordeal if you are lucky enough to hold a British, American or EU passport, but spare a thought for those less fortunate that require a travel visa for just about any destination. In the course of the past 18 months many countries have altered border entry requirements and some, like Switzerland, have become Schengen member states. All of this leaves many holiday makers scratching their heads and thinking “Do I need a visa to travel?”

At last a website that combines all those little bits of bite size information into a one-stop domain known as Visa Guru.

Visa Guru provides information about travel visas, tourist visas and Schengen visas. With a clever linking database: you can find out if you require a travel visa by entering your nationality and your destination country. Visa Guru not only reveals if you need a visa to travel but also what documents you are required to take to the relevant embassy along with the fees and embassy contact details. All of these details along with a check-list are easily emailed to you at the click-of-a-mouse.

Short of time or don’t want the hassle of applying for a visa? Visa Guru can show you which countries you are able to travel to visa free. The VisaFree service will enable you make use of last minute travel deals.

Visa Guru also has a unique scoring system which rates each embassy on the hassle factor involved in obtaining a travel visa. The Visa Hassle Factor Score rates each country and gives travelers the opportunity to avoid those with stringent visa regulations.

Enthusiastic Marketing Manager, Ryan Smethurst, reveals today that “Visa Guru offers the best search engines for hotels, hostels, last minute hotel deals, flights and car hire. Visa Guru also suggests things-to-do and tours on offer at your destination. It’s a website that’s long overdue and absolutely essential to anyone embarking on an international holiday.”

When asked what advice he could offer to would be holiday makers he said “plan early and double check the turn-around-time of visa applications. Some embassies can take 3 working days when you go in directly but other embassies have completely outsourced this process to an outside companies and it can take up to 4 weeks: plan, plan plan!”

Antarctica Has Astonishing Natural Resources

By Israel Torres

Cordoned off as a realm only for international scientific endeavors, Antarctica offers countless opportunities for research that can not be obtained anywhere else on the globe. The great ice sheet of Antarctica is amazing because it covers most of the land and also provides hundreds of miles of permanent ice shelves over the ocean. Crossing the Ross Shelf Ice would take some time, as it is as big as the State of Texas. Moving northbound at 1800 feet per year, scientists are tracking the edge of ice sheet.

With almost two percent of all the water on planet earth, the continent holds about 90 percent of all the ice on earth. The most critical facet of maintaining ocean levels revolves around the great inland ice shelf’s stability. If it continues to melt, sea levels would rise visibly, and destroy seaports and alter coastlines.

If all this ice melted at once, then the sea levels would go up by more than 250 feet. That’s why it is so important for us to find out exactly what is going on with the Antarctic icecap’s health. The backward or forward movement of the ice doesn’t really matter to most. In theory, this enormous sheet of ice contains a complete record of all geophysical events from today all the way back to potentially a million years.

History’s actions, like smelting lead and the use of leaded gasoline, show in the ice. Measurements have been taken regarding the concentration of typical lead which precipitated over the surface of the ice during the prior 60 years. Because we have burned leaded gasoline, the decomposed lead alkyls have created an increase in the lead concentration on the surface of the ice, and these levels have been increasing steadily over the last ten years. A quick look at the serious nature of pollution can be seen with this issue.

DDT didn’t show up in the ice and snow on Antarctica, but penquins, seals and some fish did show traces of this pollutant. Space particles have always been entering earth’s atmosphere. These can be examined in the ice sheet and even dated according to their depth. Assuming that additional research uncovers that these particles contain a revolving pattern, then predictions concerning the amount and type of space particles that vehicles will run into can be determined.

Lichens make up a majority of Antarctic vegetation. Mites and springtails are the common animal life forms on the land itself. A wingless fly is the biggest land animal there. Remarkably, none of the insects on Antarctica can’t fly. The Weddell Seal and flightless penguin are mammals that live the farthest south; they live in the waters around Antarctica. To find food, the Weddell seal has been known to submerge itself for as long as 30 minutes and to depths of approximately 1,500 feet, which surprised researchers studying the creatures.

Adelie penguins make their nests on ice-free spots on the coast of Antarctica and then head northward during the frigid winters. No compass could compare with their ability to maintain a straight path. The use the sun, and their incredible biological abilities to do so. As a study, six of the Adelie penguins were released over 2,400 miles from their natural habitat and three of them found their way back within ten months. There are more that were let go near the South Pole. After they emerged, they studied their new environment, focused on the sun a bit, and then headed exactly in the right direction for their home nests.

The biggest creature ever to live contributes to this region’s productivity by its mere presence. Eating nearly one ton of shrimp daily, and weighing in at five times any past dinosaur, the great blue whale is nearing extinction. Antarctic waters house lots more species of fish than the Arctic does. With 90 percent of bottom living Antarctic fish only found in the Antarctica region, this proves to be an astonishing example of the capability of the Antarctic Convergence.
